Domestic Violence Protection Orders  AKA Restraining Orders

A domestic violence protection order, also known as a restraining order, is a legal document issued by a court to protect you from abuse or threats of abuse from someone you have a close relationship with. In Las Vegas, these orders are taken seriously and can provide you with the safety and security you need.

There are two main types of protection orders available in Las Vegas. Temporary Protective Orders (TPOs) are short-term orders that can be issued quickly to provide immediate protection. Extended Protective Orders (EPOs) offer longer-term protection and require a court hearing.

We will talk about both of these orders on this page.  You can also call us any time to discuss your situation with a lawyer.

When to Seek a Protection Order

If you’re experiencing physical abuse, threats of violence, stalking, or harassment, or if you fear for your safety or the safety of your children, it might be time to consider a protection order. Your safety is paramount, and our family law experts at Kelleher & Kelleher can help you determine if a protection order is the right step for your situation.

How to Get a Protection Order in Las Vegas

The process begins with filing an application at the Family Court and Services Center in Las Vegas. You’ll need to fill out the required forms and provide any supporting documentation you have, such as police reports or medical records. There’s no fee to file for a domestic violence protection order, making it accessible to those who need it most.

Once you’ve filed your application, a judge will review it quickly – typically within one business day. If approved, you’ll be granted a Temporary Protective Order (TPO). This order lasts for about 45 days and requires the abuser to stay away from you. It can also include other protective measures as needed.

For longer-term protection, you can apply for an Extended Protective Order (EPO). This involves filling out additional paperwork and attending a court hearing, usually within 45 days of the TPO being issued. You’ll need to present your case to a judge, and if granted, an EPO can last up to a year and provide more comprehensive protection.
